PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sal Zizzo and Brian Umony scored first-half goals to lead the Portland Timbers to a 2-0 win over Club Atletico Independiente of Argentina in a friendly Tuesday night. The win was Portlands first on its home field in nine games, a stretch that includes five Major League Soccer and four exhibition matches. The last time the Timbers won at Jeld-Wen Field was May 21 against Columbus. The Timbers (6-10-3 MLS) are 1-3 in exhibition matches this season. "In the first half, they were the superior team," Independiente coach Antonio Mohamed said of the Timbers. Independiente, of the Argentine Primera Division, has won 16 international championships during its existence and is considered one of the worlds most successful club teams. Coming off a 1-0 loss at Columbus last Saturday, most of the Timbers starters rested against the Argentina opponent. Nonetheless, Portland dominated the first half, as the Timbers produced a number of quality scoring opportunities, two that led to goals. "I thought every player we had on the field, especially in the first half, looked like a quality player," Portland coach John Spencer said. Portland took a 1-0 lead during the 36th minute when Zizzo streaked down the right side of the field and kicked a 15-yard shot past Independiente goalie Hilario Navarro. Three minutes later, the Timbers struck with a beautiful goal off a set play 35 yards from the goal. Mike Chabala crossed the ball just inside the top of the penalty box, where Umony sent a header over Navarro and into the goal for a 2-0 Portland lead. Chabala, a defender acquired in a trade with Houston last Thursday, made his Timbers debut against Independiente. "For me, (the assist) wasnt the important part. Its the shutout, and showing the guys I can contribute to the team," Chabala said. The Timbers have had trouble holding leads during their recent home-field slide. Last week in an exhibition against West Bromwich Albion, Portland built a 2-0 halftime lead, only to lose 3-2 in stoppage time. "Were tired of losing games. When you put your uniform on, it means something," Spencer said. "At halftime, you could tell from the guys look in their eyes that they werent going to it slip." Independiente threatened to score a couple of times during the second half. CAIs best chance came during the 85th minute on a set play just outside the penalty box, but Julian Velaquezs kick was turned away by Portlands defensive wall. Missing from the Timbers was midfielder Jack Jewsbury, who will participate Wednesday night for the Major League Soccer all-star team against Manchester United in New Jersey. MAINZ, Germany -- Germany thrashed Armenia 6-1 in the sides last friendly match before the World Cup but influential midfielder Marco Reus participation in the tournament was left hanging in the balance on Friday. Reus was helped off the pitch before the break after twisting his left ankle while challenging Artur Yedigaryan for the ball. Reus immediately dropped to the grass and appeared in considerable pain. Team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt shook his head as he assisted the Borussia Dortmund player off the pitch. Reus was taken to the hospital to determine the full extent of the injury. "Hes getting checked out now and we have to wait for the diagnosis," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "I saw it at halftime and you could see it was swollen. I hope its nothing to do with the ligaments. We hope, of course, that hes not out (of the World Cup)." Lukas Podolski, who came on for Reus, put on a man-of-the-match performance by setting up three goals and scoring another. "When he plays like this hes hard to stop," Loew said. Podolski whipped in a cross for Andre Schuerrle to beat Armenia keeper Roman Berezovsky at the near post in the 52nd. Henrikh Mkhitaryan equalized with a penalty in the 69th, when he sent Dortmund teammmate Roman Weidenfeller the wrong way.dddddddddddd Another Dortmund player, Kevin Grosskreutz, conceded the spot kick a minute after coming on as a substitute. Podolski responded with a goal of his own in the 69th after a good assist from Arsenal teammate Mesut Ozil and Benedikt Hoewedes made it 3-1 at the second attempt a minute after that. Podolski then crossed for Miroslav Klose to head his record 69th international goal in the 77th. The veteran striker had shared Germanys goal-scoring record with Gerd Mueller. Podolski set up Mario Goetze for the fifth goal in the 82nd, before Klose laid the ball back for Goetze to claim his second in the 89th. The game, however, was overshadowed by Reus injury. There was better news from Loews perspective on Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger, who returned after recovering from an ankle and knee injury respectively. Lahm played the first half in midfield alongside Sami Khedira, who made way with half an hour remaining for Schweinsteiger. Ozil, who hit the post, answered some of his recent critics with an encouraging performance. "We were fresher after the days off but now we need training in Brazil to get used to the climate," Loew said.
